by overthetop on Feb.03, 2010, under Leadership
I want to ask you a question…and before you read any further I want you take a pen and paper and make a list of all the qualities you would like to see in people that you sponsor into your business. Have a good think about it. What would be your profile of the perfect prospect that you want to sponsor. Are you looking for leaders? Would you like to sponsor people who are aggressive? Heavy-hitters? Entrepreneurial? How about their preferred age…in their 60’s, maybe their 40’s, perhaps even their 20’s?
Stop reading right here and take a few minutes to write down the qualities you would really like to see in the people on your business team that you believe would bring you network marketing success. It doesn’t really matter how many qualities…just make it as many as you can possibly think of.
Here are a few possibilities to help get you started…
1. great people person
2. entrepreneurial
3. great drive
4. high work ethic
5. teachable/coachable
6. awesome people skills
7. sponsoring machine
8. leader
9. impeccable character
10. servant heart
11. generous
12. communicator
13. persistent
14. passionately determined
15. team player
16. loves to have fun
Make the list longer if you like…try and think of all the qualities you think would make the best distributor for your business.
Ok now…answer another question. What do you think will determine whether the people you want in your business are the people you actually get. ie. they will have many of the qualities you just listed as desirable. The answer to that question may not be what you expect…and maybe not what you want to hear.
Here is the answer… It is primarily determined by who you are…not by what you want.
Now I want you to go back to that list you made and next to each desirable quality you identified, place a tick if you yourself possess that quality. Eg. If you listed “great leader” and you yourself are an excellent leader, that would be a match…and it gets a tick. But if your leadership is not so good…maybe below average, put an “X” and write “average leader” or “leadership 5/10″ next to it. If you wrote that you would like people who are “great ‘people’ people” and you possess that quality yourself, put a tick. If you don’t build relationships very well, people don’t find you easy to be around or relate to etc, mark that one with an “X”…and so on through the whole list.
Now…when you’ve been right through the list, review the results. If you see a whole lot of “X’s”, you could be in a little trouble because the people you said you wanted in your business will not be the type of people who want to follow you. In the majority of situations, you will attract people with similar qualities to yourself.
If you think that your people are negative, then it would be a good idea to check your attitude.
It is possible for a leader to go out and recruit people unlike himself, but those are not the people he will naturally attract.
The better leader you are, the better leaders you will tend to naturally attract. This may necessitate that you undertake your own personal development program.
If you think the people you attract could be better, then it is time for you to improve yourself.
This principal tends to hold true in all areas of life.
Here is a short story from my own past that illustrates what I am saying very well.
Some years ago…in the mid 1990’s…my wife and I took on a position as senior pastors of a small local church. We were asked to consider taking on the position after there had been some issues with the previous leadership. Most of the people had left and the church was left with a very small membership consisting only of people who were at the time older than 55 years. My wife and I were in our early & late mid 30’s. Add to that age difference was the fact that both my wife and I were (and still are) younger than our years in our thinking, our attitudes, out likes and dislikes etc.
Things generally went ok and after a while we started growing again. Most of the new people were younger than us…and it was only around a year or so until every person who was there when we took over the church was gone. They had been more than replaced by people much younger. What’s more, I was a musician…and music always was important to me and something I was quite passionate about. Both my wife and I had a tertiary education…none of the original members had an education past high school. We both had been in positions of successful leadership for some years prior to this.
As an excellent illustration of the principle I am talking of in this post, you may be able to conclude what the church looked like after a few years. We had a whole heap of musicians and singers (of varying talents) and as well, the biggest single age segment of the congregation was 22 to 30 year old university students. We related to everyone quite well and were mostly well liked, but we connected with those people in particular really well. Not only that there was a disproportionate number of potentially really good leaders among them.
Who you get is not determined by what you want. It is determined by who you are.

Network Marketing Success – Leadership Doesn’t Develop in a Day
by overthetop on Jan.29, 2010, under Leadership
Becoming a leader does not happen in just a day…or with a decision. Same goes for a person’s recognition as a leader. These statements apply not just in network marketing success…they apply in any and all contexts.
It takes a period of time for leadership qualities to become evident in a persons life…and as they do, that person is able to step forward as a leader.
The real proof of leadership is not where you start out…it is where you end up!
I want to give you seven key areas that will develop as a person increases in stature as a successful leader:
1. The “character” of the person: Who you are…
It is impossible to be a true leader without the “inner person” being of impeccable character. The 1st thing you need to begin developing if you will be a leader is your character…who you really are when no one is looking. Honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, servant hood, generosity, unselfishness etc…this is where true leadership starts. This is why someone like Billy Graham was able to draw more & more followers as time went by. His influence grew to being sort after to advice presidents. People can sense the incredible depth of his character. This quality is essential in any context and especially for long term network marketing success.
Character makes trust possible…and trust makes leadership possible.
2. The relationships a person has: Who you know…
You are only a leader if you have followers, and having followers always necessitates the developing of relationships. The deeper the relationships you have…the stronger your potential for influence. If you want to be a leader you must build genuine relationships. This is an ongoing process and is especially true for network marketing success.
3. The knowledge a person has: What you know…
Knowledge alone will never make anyone a leader, but without it you will never be a leader either. You will need an understanding of the facts, the factors involved as well as a vision for where you are going
4. The “sixth sense” or intuition a person possesses: What you feel…
Leadership requires more than just knowledge or information
Whenever leaders find themselves facing a problem, they automatically measure it and begin solving it…using a mixture of information and intuition.
Who you are dictates what you see.
5. The experience a person has: Where you’ve been…
Like knowledge…experience alone will not make a credible leader…but it will make it more likely that potential followers will give you a chance to prove yourself. If you’ve faced a few situations in the past it is logical to assume you learned some things
6. The past successes a person has had: What you’ve done…
This one is very much a process. Nothing builds confidence in potential followers like a good track record. If you are just starting out it does not mean you can’t be a leader. But you won’t have the same credibility or the same following as the person with a great track record…they have proven themselves. This is why leadership is a process. Your leadership credibility will start off small…but as you procure a few achievements your credibility will grow. Everyone has to start somewhere…and as you extend yourself, take a few risks and succeed, followers have another reason to trust your leadership ability and listen to what you have to say.
7. The abilities a person has: What you can do…
At the end of the day, followers have to believe that you can do what needs to be done. That is the reason they will listen to what you say and acknowledge you as their leader. If ever they start to believe that you can’t deliver, they will stop listening to you and stop following.
People listen not necessarily because what is being spoken is true, but rather because of their respect for the person speaking.
If you see a disparity between who has the “title” and who is leading the people, then the person with the title is not real leader.
How do leaders earn respect? By making sound decisions, admitting their mistakes, and putting what is in the best interests of their followers and organization ahead of their own personal agendas.

Network Marketing Success – Leadership is Influence
by overthetop on Jan.21, 2010, under Leadership
What are the qualities of a successful network marketing leader?
A functioning “leader” could be defined as a person who has people following them. A potential “leader” might be described as a person who people would follow if he were ever to realize and develop the abilities he/she has within them and focus those abilities toward achievement both for themselves as well as for others. A person can claim to be a leader but if there is no one following them then they are really just out going for a walk!
There are many qualities of a successful leader:
I am only going to focus on influence in this article…primarily because the true measure of leadership is INFLUENCE, nothing more and nothing less.
A leader is someone that will do all they can possibly do to “influence” their down-lines to do what ever they need to do to achieve their network marketing success. Now, for sure there will always be those who just won’t be prepared to do “whatever it takes”, often because they tell themselves that it is too hard, they just can’t do that, or whatever. But a great leader will be able to influence, inspire and motivate more people to change, grow and develop skills etc. than will the person with lesser influencing ability.
If you don’t have influence, you will never be able to lead others. That statement begs the question…”How then do you measure influence?”
To answer that I’ll give you a story…
In 1997, the world was stunned by two events that occurred less than a week apart: the deaths of Princess Diana and Mother Teresa. On the surface these two woman could not possibly have been more different. Diana was a tall, young glamorous princess from England who circulated in the highest society. Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient was a small elderly Catholic nun born in Albania who served the poorest of the poor in Calcutta, India. However the remarkable thing was that their impact was amazingly similar. In a 1996 poll, published by the London Daily Mail, Princess Diana and Mother Teresa were voted in 1st & 2nd places as the world’s most caring people. Now, that just doesn’t happen unless you have a lot of influence. How could someone like Diana ever be regarded in the same way as Mother Teresa? Simply put…she demonstrated the power of “influence”.
When she married Prince Charles nearly 1 billion people watched the televised wedding. After taking a little time to settle in to her new role, she began travelling & representing the royal family around the world, she quickly made it her goal to serve others, raising funds for numerous charitable causes. During the process she built many important relationships…politicians, leaders of humanitarian causes, entertainers and heads of state etc. At the start she was simply a catalyst for fund-raising, but over time her influence increased…as did her ability to make things happen.
She rallied people to causes like AIDS research, caring for people with leprosy and a ban on land mines. That last issue she successfully brought to the attention of world leaders, even convincing the Clinton administration to support a world conference banning the devices. Such was her influence that she put the issue on the world agenda, influencing even the US President.
To begin with Diana’s title had merely given her a platform to address others, but she quickly became a person of influence in her own right. When she was divorced from Charles in 1996, she may have lost her title, but her impact (read “influence”) on others actually continued to increase…while…despite titles and position, that of ex-husband Charles declined. Incredibly, even in death her influence continued. When her funeral was broadcast on TV and radio the total watching/listening audience was estimated at around 2.5 billion…well over double the number who tuned in to her wedding. A classic demonstration of the law of “influence”.
Diana is probably seldom referred to as a leader…yet that is exactly what she was. She made things happen because she was an influencer, and leadership is influence…nothing more, nothing less.
Leadership is NOT:
Management…management usually involves some sort of title, but you don’t need a title to have influence. A manager can maintain direction, but they can’t change it unless they are also a leader. To move people in a new direction you need influence.
Knowledge… there are many very educated and knowledgeable people with ability to think so high it is through the roof…but whose ability to lead is so low it doesn’t even register on the scale.
Entrepreneur… one can be exceptionally enterprising, innovating, successful, brilliant salesperson etc…but have no long term influence with people.
Pioneer… it is a misconception to assume that anyone “out the front” is necessarily a leader. Being 1st and leading are different. To be a leader one not only needs to be out front, but also have people voluntarily coming behind & following the lead, acting on the leaders vision.
Position…position and leadership have nothing to do with each other. There are many people with “position” but have little or no influence and many people who have no position but are very influential. “It’s not the position that makes the leader; it’s the leader that makes the position.” Stanley Huffty.
A leadership proverb: “He who thinks he leads, but has no followers, is only taking a walk.” If you can’t influence others, they won’t follow you. And if they won’t follow, you’re not a leader. That’s the “Law of Influence”.
No matter how you think and speak of yourself, a truly successful leader is someone that helps their down-lines to achieve network marketing success. You must teach your down-lines how to generate their own leads and find their own prospects…offline and online.
As a leader you must empower others. A good leader is not someone who does it all themselves but who teaches others to be independent and to be quite capable of completely replacing you. The best position you can be in is where you are no longer needed.
You will also understand that you are not their boss. People do not join network marketing to be bossed around by their up-lines, but to be independent business people. You can learn to be firm when you want your down-lines to do something for their own good, but be firm in inspiring…not firm in bossing.
Lastly, a good network marketing success leader is someone who is willing to serve and make sacrifices. There is no long term network marketing success without sacrifice and although it can at times be difficult to sacrifice your time, money and sometimes your comfort, it will pay off if you work hard and build a solid organization so that your down-line leaders will be ready to duplicate what they have seen and experienced you doing.
